Built in 1943 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works for the United States Government as a USRA designed locomotive #2630 with a 2-8-0 wheel arrangement, it was later re-numbered to #612. The locomotive served most of it's life at the U.S. Army's railroad training facility in Ft. Eustis, VA. In 1971 the locomotive was donated to the State of West Virginia for use at Cass Scenic Railroad, but never operated there.
Although the photos do not present this locomotive as a gem, it really is in pretty decent condition and is 95% complete. Much of the equipment has been removed from the locomotive to reduce it's weight for shipment. The owner is available to arrange shipment of the locomotive and also has the capabilities to restore it to operating condition for a Buyer. Some of the locomotives mechanical details include: The flues and many of the appliances have been removed from the locomotive to reduce it's shipping weight, 19" x 26" cylinders, working pressure 225 lbs, coal fired, 41 sq ft grate area, power reverse, 8x11 friction bearing journals (on locomotive), 31,500lb tractive effort, c/n 69858 Updated info 10/24/14 Locomotive has been disassembled so that it can be easily trucked to new location

Guv writes from Belgium about footlocker.. I found it as a kid in the attic with my grandparents house in the ‘70’s. I never got around asking how he got it, as both passed away in 1982, and my mother doesn’t remember either She was a young girl during the war. I assume my grandfather must have met these GI’s at a railyard, close where they lived at Namur, Belgium, As my grandfather was a construction worker. I hoping posting on the blog might shed some light....

      The organization has disbanded for reasons of age but the website has

Joel Sayre (1901) was a war correspondent who spent 49 weeks with the
Persian Gulf Command.  He wrote for the New Yorker and was a friend
of James Thurber.  Short biography at IMDb.

• Nationwide Gravesite Locator database from the US Department of Veterans Affairs, which catalogs burial locations of veterans and their family members in VA national cemeteries, state veterans cemeteries, other military and Department of the Interior cemeteries, and private cemeteries (after 1997) when the grave is marked with a government marker

• Arlington National Cemetery ANC Explorer, a web-based or mobile app you can use to locate gravesites, view gravestone images and more.

• American Battle Monuments Commission database, which includes names of more than 218,000 service members buried or memorialized overseas

• Casualties databases on the National Archives website, covering the Korean and Vietnam wars (you also can use easier-to-search versions on FamilySearch for Korea or Vietnam)
