763rd Railway Shop Battalion Joseph F De Luca

Pictured: Joseph F De Luca and his separation papers

His son, Michael writes ...thank you very much for posting "A History Of Two Years Of Activation" , my Father Joseph F De Luca , was assigned to Headquarters Company , his name is listed on page 39 of 70 in the article. It was very rewarding for me to read about their mission and learn what my father did during the war ! He had only told me stories , but never really described there actual mission. So again, I really enjoyed your history of their Battalion! Thanks Again ;Michael DeLuca

763rd ROB soldier James N. Herring : His son Dean's trip back to England

Fascinating research by one of 763rd ROB soldiers, James Herring by his son Dean - you can trace his research into the Weston Camp where the unit was stationed in 1943 and see what is still there and how the camp effected the locals and what they remember of the friendly Yanks today ..

Thanks Dean

763rd Railway Battalion -- Jim Grossman

Thanks so much to Jim for these great photos.
Jim Grossman writes ...
I was the supply officer for the 763rd Railway Battalion (Maintenance) at Ft. Eustis, Va. from Sept. 1964 to about July 1965, when I left to go to 8th Army Hqs in Korea. The battalion was being taken out of service at that time.

Here are two; in one I am sitting in engine 606 in Jan.1965, and the other is a photo of me with fellow lieutenants during a field exercise at Ft. Eustis in March 1965. In that photo, Lt. Colonel Walsh, the battalion commander is promoting 2nd Lt. Cummins to 1st Lt. I am second from the right in the photo.
At that time there where two battalions in a Group (I cannot recall the Group's number and name). They were the 714th Operating Battalion and the 763rd Maintenance Battalion. I got orders in March 1965 to be reassigned to the 8th Army in Korea the coming July. About a month after that, nearly every lieutenant in both battalions received orders to report to Danang in Vietnam around the same time.

The 714th and 763rd were the last two railroad battalions in the Army in 1965, I believe. I do not know if they were revived there or in Vietnam.

763rd Railway Shop Battalion Opal L Presley photos

From BPresley ....(thanks !)

I just discovered your web site after a Google search of my dad’s military unit. I have in my possession a copy of the booklet “A History of Two years Activation”. My father was Opal L. Presley and served in this unit. I know precious little about his experience in the war as he died at the age of 49 in 1957 when I was only 7 years old. I only recently discovered this book....Attached are a few pictures my dad took while in Belgium. Unfortunately, I have no narrative of who are where.
